Nintendo Switch 2 outsells Nintendo Switch by 10 million

Nintendo’s latest financial report revealed some impressive numbers for the Nintendo Switch 2, including that the console has sold roughly 10 million more units than the original Switch did during its first six months on the market. 

Switch 2 sales over the period amount to approximately 17.37 million units worldwide during the six months. This compares favorably to the roughly 7.6 million the Nintendo Switch sold during its first six months.

Not only does this mean it has already surpassed the overall sales of consoles like the Wii U (13.56 million lifetime sales), but it also cements the Nintendo Switch 2’s position as the fastest-selling console in Nintendo’s history.

Breakthrough

However, analysis of the statistics indicates greater parity between the consoles than Nintendo’s data initially indicates. 

Analysis from VGC found that, comparing both consoles’ sales in the three months leading up to December 31, the Switch 2’s performance during the period was almost on par with that of the Nintendo Switch. Both platforms had sold 7.01 million units and 7.23 million units during the Christmas period, respectively.

With a much stronger launch back in June, however, the Switch 2 outperforms its record-breaking predecessor on an overall basis.

During its first nine months on the market, the original Nintendo Switch had sold 14.86 million units following its March 2017 release. It’s only taken six months for the Switch 2 to surpass this number, suggesting the platform was a much-needed upgrade from the Nintendo Switch. 

Despite being the most expensive Nintendo console on the market, the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to show signs of an even more promising future.

Given an increase in quality titles and continuing third-party support with releases like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we might prove to have Nintendo’s best console yet on our hands.
